💜 Love Through an Autistic Lens

What Does Love Really Mean?

For many, love is a feeling—expressed through words, hugs, or gifts. But what if those expressions don’t resonate the same way for everyone?

Autistic individuals often experience and express love differently. Many don’t intuitively pick up on social expectations around affection, and common expressions of love—like light touches, surprise gifts, or vague words—can feel confusing or even overwhelming.

As Susan, an autistic retired Occupational Therapist, explains:

"Love is tailoring your actions to meet someone’s needs."

Love isn’t just about saying the right words; it’s about recognizing and honoring what actually makes someone feel safe, understood, and valued. This shift in perspective can transform relationships—whether between parents and children, partners, or friends.

But how can non-autistic people recognize and appreciate the ways autistics express love? And what are the biggest misconceptions that create disconnects?
