Understanding Transitions Through the Autistic Lens: Strategies for Support

Staci Neustadt

"When it comes to transition, if I have to shift from doing something like watching

(visual) to language (listening/talking) because someone says something to me it can be difficult, even painful. If I am really hyperfocused it is hard for me to pull away from what I'm doing to shift to another area of the brain to process what someone's saying."

For autistic children, if they are in the middle of doing something they enjoy, they want to finish, or they are hyperfocusing on transitions, it may not be desirable (I can relate!).

How can you help autistic individuals make the shift more comfortably?

  1. Have a schedule so I know the transition will happen

  2. Provide me with a visual cue (visual timer - not loud sound)

  3. Help me conclude what I’m doing before making the shift
